Heroes and Villains

It's a quiet day in the Metropolis of Towncity. Everyone was happy and peaceful. Until they discovered the body of a man in an alley, the top of his head removed, and his brains charred in his head.

Mahayla; long grey hair, huge black wings, her eyes are kinda weird... the pupil is the same color as the iris, and the iris is a very dark grey. Almost black, but not quite. Here's a picture: [Only admins are allowed to see this link]

Mahayla perched on the edge of the building that created part of the alley's wall and peered down at the dead man. It was creepy... disgusting. She shuffled her wings nervously and wriggled her toes in her rainboots. Who'd done this?

[And yes, I purposefully didn't give her age, 'cause she's like.. hundreds of years old.. but like I said, acts about ten to fifteen, depending.]

She saw a trail of footprints leading away from the body.

She looked hesitantly after them before slipping from the building and falling, opening her wings just enough to break her fall before touching down. A flurry of black feathers drifted from her wings at the movement. She paused a moment longer before slowly trailing the footprints.

They faded away, but she saw a man whose shoes looked like they were a match for the prints walking down the street, into a cafe.

She stopped, wavering in her boots as she watched the man, quietly scrutinizing his physical features before glancing around for a place that looks as if it has a phone she can borrow.

His features are obscured by the collar of his trenchcoat, his fedora, and his red-tinted glasses. She can see nothing.

She bites her lip and pulls her hands up into her sleeves, fidgeting. The cafe would probably have a phone... She shifted from foot to foot a few moments longer, then trotted toward the cafe also.

The man in the glasses was sitting at a window table for two, sipping a cup of tea.

Mahayla wandered to the counter, trying to look not suspicious and, as usual, not doing a very good job at doing so. She stood on tiptoe and put her arms on the counter, addressing the person behind it. "Can I use your phone, please?"

[btw, she's about 4'10"]

"Certainly, miss." As he went to get it, one of the waiters brought her a cup of her favorite drink, and her favorite pastry, even though she's never been to this cafe before and doesn't know the waiter.

She studies the drink and food, then looks up at the waiter. "I didn't order that," she wavers.

"Compliments of the man in the window." He points to glasses-man, at the window table. When she looks over at him, he raises his glass to her before sipping again.

Her stomach does a flipflop and she faces the counter again, hands clenching in her sleeves as she waits for the phone.

The man comes back. "I'm sorry, ma'am, but our phone appears to be malfunctioning at the moment."

"Do you have a cell phone?" She takes on a pleading look, not at all comfortable with the circumstances.

"Sorry, no." He looks across the room. "That gentleman there has a phone." He points to glasses-man, who has a cell phone on the table in front of him.

Mahayla mumbles something incoherent and shakes her head. "I don't think he... I don't really.." She looks up from the counter. "Thank you." With that, she turns and heads for the door.

She sees glasses-man rise and exit the cafe after her.

The moment she exits the cafe, she opens her wings and bursts into the sky, quickly gaining altitude despite not having a running take-off because of her large wings.

The man looks up after her, smirking softly.

Mahayla puts a good amount of space between herself and the ground before soaring off for the police station.

Nothing happens until she gets within sight of the police station, and then she finds herself back at the entrance to the cafe, with no sense of time having passed.

Mahayla blinked several times, confused. She looked around, placing her surroundings, as she shook one hand free of her sleeve and touched the front wall of the cafe.

She heard a soft chuckle behind her.
